About the role#
Information Technology Services is looking for a Network Engineering Intern to support the university's enterprise network. This role provides exposure to the full lifecycle of network engineering, ranging from physical hardware deployment to systems automation and core infrastructure design. You will work across three primary areas: wireless deployment, network management, and core infrastructure.
What you'll do#
- Install and configure wireless access points and assist with site surveys.
- Troubleshoot wireless connectivity issues and validate new deployments.
- Document inventory, placement, and configuration changes.
- Support network monitoring platforms and build dashboards to improve visibility.
- Develop or maintain automation scripts to streamline operations.
- Create and update operational runbooks and standard procedures.
- Assist with the configuration and maintenance of switches, routers, and core infrastructure.
- Support network design, capacity planning, and change management activities.
- Maintain accurate network diagrams and infrastructure documentation.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree-seeking program, such as Computer Science, Data Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
- A basic understanding of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and the OSI model.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively and manage time across assignments and academic responsibilities.
- Effective communication skills and a willingness to learn across multiple technical disciplines.
- Preferred experience includes coursework or hands-on work with platforms like Cisco or Aruba.
- Exposure to scripting or automation tools such as Python, Bash, or Ansible is helpful.
- Familiarity with network monitoring tools or prior experience in IT helpdesk or lab settings is a plus.
- An interest in pursuing industry certifications like the Cisco CCNA.
