About the role#
This Nurse Extern II role is designed for nursing students graduating in December 2026. Based at the Neuro Medical Unit at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, this position offers an opportunity to gain clinical experience while preparing for a transition into a nursing role after graduation. This position requires a commitment of 8 hours per week until graduation.
What you'll do#
- Complete activities of daily living, vital sign monitoring, and blood glucose testing under the observation of a Registered Nurse.
- Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to establish care plans based on patient health, education, and developmental needs.
- Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations and needs to the nursing team.
- Administer medication as delegated by a Registered Nurse, following an evaluation of clinical judgment and skill proficiency.
- Manage patient care, including positioning, transporting, and lifting, while adhering to safety protocols.
- Develop delegation skills and participate in emergency situations under appropriate supervision.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program, specifically in your final year.
- Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts.
- Ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities in a clinical environment.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing or pulling with 30 lbs of force, and performing sliding transfers.
- Ability to demonstrate age-specific care knowledge and interpret patient data accurately.
