About the role#
This Nurse Extern II position is located in the Medical Telemetry Observation unit at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center. The role is designed for nursing students graduating in December 2026 who are interested in gaining clinical experience within a Magnet-designated facility. This is a part-time, on-site opportunity requiring 8 hours of work per week, with schedules coordinated around your academic commitments. The program begins in August 2026.
What you'll do#
- Assist with activities of daily living, vital sign completion, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of a Registered Nurse.
- Collaborate with the nursing team to establish patient care plans based on health, education, and developmental needs.
- Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations to the Registered Nurse.
- Administer medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse following an evaluation of clinical judgment and proficiency.
- Develop delegation skills by working with Health Unit Coordinators and Nursing Assistants.
- Manage an increased patient load while incorporating time management principles into your daily routine.
- Participate in patient positioning and transport duties, which involve lifting, pushing, and pulling.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program.
- Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities or workloads.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing or pulling with 30 pounds of force, and performing sliding transfers.
