About the role#
This internship is designed for students currently enrolled in an accredited Surgical Technology program. The role provides hands-on experience in the operating room, with a focus on preparing students for potential post-graduation employment at their chosen site. This is a part-time position requiring a commitment of one day per week, with flexible scheduling available depending on the location.
What you'll do#
- Perform preparatory and scrubbing services to support patient care in the operating room.
- Assist with surgical cases across all specialty areas.
- Maintain a sterile, dry, and unobstructed field during procedures.
- Prepare and drape the surgical area and assist with gowning and gloving.
- Anticipate surgeon needs, pass instruments, and hold retractors.
- Set up operating rooms, including moving equipment like tables, cameras, and microscopes.
- Operate and maintain various types of surgical equipment.
- Transport patients, equipment, and supplies.
- Ensure environmental disinfection and safety standards are met.
- Maintain specialty carts and monitor the condition of supplies.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited or approved Surgical Technology program.
- Completion of at least one clinical rotation may be required.
- Basic knowledge of aseptic surgical techniques and operating room equipment.
- Basic computer proficiency and strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association within 6 months of hire.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, push or pull with 30 lbs of force, and perform frequent standing, walking, and bending.
Location & details#
- This role is on-site at various Advocate Health locations across Wisconsin, including Aurora, Grafton, Sheboygan, Oshkosh, and Manitowoc.
- This is a paid, part-time internship with a rolling application process.
