About the role#
This Nurse Externship is a part-time program for nursing students preparing for their transition into professional nursing. You will rotate through three units at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, including Med Surg Ortho, Acute Care for the Elderly/Stroke/Observation, and Cardiac Medical Telemetry. Each month, you will move to a new unit to learn about different patient populations, unit cultures, and leadership styles. The program aims to bridge the gap between nursing school and your first graduate nurse role.
What you'll do#
- Complete activities of daily living, vital sign checks, and blood glucose monitoring.
- Collaborate with Registered Nurses to establish patient plans of care.
- Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations to the care team.
- Administer medication under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Develop delegation skills for working with Health Unit Coordinators and Nursing Assistants.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program, specifically in your final year or as a recent graduate.
- Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts.
- Availability to start in September 2026.
- Commitment to working at least one 8-hour shift per week until graduation.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs and assisting with patient transfers.
