About the role#
Western National Insurance is hiring a Data Engineering Intern for the Summer 2027 program. You will join the Data & Integrations team in Edina, Minnesota. This full-time, paid internship offers hands-on experience with enterprise data warehousing, software development, and Agile delivery practices. You will work alongside experienced engineers to support systems that turn business data into useful information.
What you'll do#
- Work with data technologies including SQL Server, SSIS, Snowflake, and Python.
- Develop and test enhancements to ETL/ELT workflows and data applications.
- Troubleshoot and debug data integration and Enterprise Data Warehousing issues.
- Write clear, maintainable code and participate in unit testing and code reviews.
- Join Agile activities such as planning, work estimation, and team discussions.
- Identify ways to improve data processes, automation, and team efficiency.
- Create and maintain technical documentation.
- Follow data security, privacy, and change-management practices.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree or coursework in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Engineering, or Information Systems.
- Basic experience with SQL and relational databases.
- Exposure to Python or another scripting language.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail when working with code and data.
- Willingness to ask questions and learn from feedback.
- Two years of college or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Familiarity with Git, Agile practices, or ETL technologies is a plus.
- Exposure to DevOps, CI/CD, or container tools like Docker is a bonus.
