About the role#
This internship supports the WaterOne Emergency Management Program. You will gain practical experience in emergency planning, training, and exercises while learning how these principles apply to critical utility infrastructure. You will work primarily with the Supervisor of Risk Mitigation to develop preparedness materials and support program documentation.
What you'll do#
- Support the development, review, and update of emergency plans, procedures, checklists, and contact lists.
- Assist with the design and development of emergency exercises based on operational risks, including scenario development and participant materials.
- Help plan and facilitate tabletop, notification, functional, and field exercises.
- Support exercises involving severe weather, water contamination, major system disruptions, power outages, active threats, and chemical shortages.
- Collect participant feedback and assist with after-action reports, lessons learned, and tracking corrective actions.
- Research emergency management standards, utility preparedness, and local, state, or federal guidance.
- Develop training materials, presentations, and job aids for employees.
- Provide administrative and project support for the Emergency Management Program.
- Participate in meetings, planning sessions, and facility visits.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or GED.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Safety, Public Administration, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field.
- Completion of at least one year of college with a minimum of 24 total credit hours.
- At least 6 credit hours of coursework in Emergency Management, Safety, Homeland Security, or Public Safety.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to research and organize information.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet WaterOne driving standards.
- Ability to travel between WaterOne facilities and participate in field assignments.
- Must pass a post-offer medical exam, background verification, and drug screen.

- Location: Lenexa, Kansas.
- Term: Summer 2027 (May 17, 2027, to August 6, 2027).
- Modality: On-site, full-time.
- Compensation: $20 per hour.
