    About the role#

    The Virginia Department of Transportation offers a paid internship program designed to introduce students to public service. You will gain hands-on experience by integrating your academic theory with practical work in engineering and related functional areas. This role is a rolling opportunity based on business needs, with the potential to extend into the academic year.

    What you'll do#

    • Apply engineering principles and practices to assigned program areas.
    • Prepare and maintain daily documentation for project activities.
    • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment, including proper storage and transport.
    • Communicate with staff, external contacts, and consultants to resolve issues.
    • Keep accurate records and enter data to meet project deadlines.
    • Perform manual labor, such as handling and preparing material samples.

    What you'll need#

    • Current full-time enrollment in an Associate degree program or higher.
    • Status as at least a rising sophomore.
    • Basic knowledge of engineering principles, mathematics, algebra, and geometry.
    • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
    • Proficiency with computers, MS Office, and smartphones.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
    • Ability to maintain full-time student status before and after the internship.
