About the role#
The Virginia Department of Transportation is hiring a Business Intern for the summer of 2027. This paid position offers students the chance to integrate academic theory with practical work experience in a government setting. You will support various functional areas and help maintain the state highway system.
What you'll do#
- Communicate with VDOT staff, consultants, and external contacts to resolve issues and share field observations.
- Apply engineering technology principles and procedures to your assigned program areas.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment, including following guidelines for storage and transport.
- Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities to ensure work stays on schedule.
- Maintain accurate records and update data to meet deadlines.
What you'll need#
- Current full-time enrollment in an Associate’s degree program or higher.
- Minimum age of 18 by the start of employment.
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
- Ability to perform manual labor, including handling and securing material samples.
- Proficiency with computers, smartphones, and MS Office software.
- Knowledge of mathematics through algebra and geometry.

- The role is on-site and full-time during the summer of 2027.
- Candidates must maintain full-time student status before and after the internship term.
