About the role#
This is a paid, full-time summer 2027 internship with the Virginia Department of Transportation. You will gain practical experience that connects your academic studies with real-world engineering projects. The role focuses on public service and technical skill development within our organization.
What you'll do#
- Communicate with VDOT staff, consultants, and external contacts to resolve issues and share observations.
- Apply engineering technology principles to assigned program areas.
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment, including following guidelines for storage and transport.
- Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities.
- Maintain accurate records and update data to meet project requirements.
- Perform manual labor tasks such as securing, handling, and preparing material samples.
What you'll need#
- Current full-time enrollment in an Associate’s degree program or higher.
- Undergraduate students must take 12 or more credit hours per semester, and graduate students must take 9 or more credit hours.
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of mathematics, specifically algebra and geometry.
- Proficiency with computers, MS Office, and smartphones.
- Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
