About the role#
This internship is a collaboration between the University of South Florida Institute of Applied Engineering and SOFWERX. You will work in a venue designed to solve complex problems for the United States Special Operations Command. This is a paid, on-site position for the Fall 2026 term.
What you'll do#
- Assist the team with mechanical design for various projects.
- Help with the fabrication, assembly, and testing of mechanical systems and components.
- Support engineering evaluations and data collection activities.
- Conduct technical research on emerging technologies and engineering solutions.
- Document your engineering findings, test results, and recommendations.
- Participate in weekly market research to identify new capabilities and technologies.
What you'll need#
- U.S. citizenship is required due to Department of Defense funding and access to Controlled Unclassified Information.
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program for Mechanical Engineering.
- Junior or Senior standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Experience with 3D modeling in Solidworks and 3D printing.
- Comfort operating general shop tools.

- Location: Tampa, Florida.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Pay: $18.50 per hour.
- Schedule: 15 to 20 hours per week.
- Work Modality: This is an in-person role.
