About the role#
The California Office of Data and Innovation (ODI) is hiring a student assistant to support the Head of Legislative and External Affairs. This role provides analytical, administrative, and coordination support to help advance the mission of delivering better government services through technology and design. You will assist with legislative tracking, stakeholder engagement, and internal operations.
What you'll do#
- Manage scheduling and logistics for internal and external meetings.
- Prepare meeting agendas, briefing packets, and follow-up summaries.
- Draft professional correspondence, memos, and routine communications.
- Track action items, deadlines, and commitments.
- Maintain digital filing systems and stakeholder contact lists.
- Assist with the preparation of reports, presentations, and dashboards.
- Coordinate travel, procurement, and administrative processes.
- Conduct background research on industry groups, trade associations, and public sector partners.
- Monitor external publications, policy trends, and legislative hearings.
- Draft bill summaries, issue briefs, and outreach materials like fact sheets and FAQs.
- Support the development of standard operating procedures and workflow improvements.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at an accredited college or university in at least six-semester units (undergraduate) or four-semester units (graduate).
- Major in Political Science, International Relations, Communications, Business Administration, or Economics.
- Strong research and writing skills.
- Foundational knowledge of the California legislative process or public policy.
- Experience supporting stakeholder engagement or public-facing initiatives.
- Interest in digital government, technology policy, or public sector innovation.
- Preference for candidates with advanced undergraduate standing or enrollment in a master’s or doctoral program.
Location & details#
- Location: Sacramento, California.
- Work Modality: Hybrid, with two days per week in the office.
- Schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Compensation: $17.00 to $22.00 per hour.
- Employment Status: Part-time, temporary, non-benefited student position.
- Work Hours: Up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks.
