    About the role#

    The Institute for Social Research is hiring 20 assistants for the Young Adult Tobacco Purchase Survey Project. This project measures tobacco sales to individuals under 21 across California. You will travel with a secret shopper partner to conduct field observations at retail locations. This is a part-time, temporary position running from January 2027 through May 2027.

    What you'll do#

    • Travel by car or plane to retail locations throughout California.
    • Coordinate travel plans and drive rental cars for the research team.
    • Conduct field observations and accurately enter purchase attempt data into a tablet.
    • Ensure your secret shopper partner follows all project protocols and procedures.
    • Communicate with staff to report travel or data-related updates.

    What you'll need#

    • You must be at least 21 years old.
    • You must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and the ability to be insured under the university plan.
    • You must be available to travel on weekends and during school breaks.
    • You must provide verification of your legal right to work in the United States.
    • While all majors are welcome, coursework in research methods is helpful.

    • This role is based in Sacramento, California, and requires on-site travel.
    • Work occurs during the Winter and Spring 2027 terms.
    • This is a paid, part-time position.
    • The role does not offer visa sponsorship.
