About the role#
The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation is looking for a student assistant to support the Student Loan Servicing Ombudsperson. You will work directly with student loan borrowers across California, providing guidance on repayment plans, federal forgiveness programs, and borrower rights. This position offers experience working within the State of California and exposure to the student loan industry.
What you'll do#
- Screen and assess inquiries from student loan borrowers.
- Communicate with borrowers via phone, email, or in-person to triage concerns and share resources.
- Help coordinate, plan, and prepare for outreach events and develop related materials.
- Track complaint data and maintain program reports.
- Prepare and generate forms, correspondence, and administrative documents.
- Coordinate with staff across department programs.
- Conduct research on state laws, the federal Higher Education Act, and consumer protection statutes.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student at an institution on the program affiliation list.
- Undergraduate students must carry at least 6-semester or 9-quarter units; graduate students must carry at least 4-semester or 6-quarter units.
- Major in Business Administration, Public Policy and Administration, Government, Communications, Liberal Arts, Operations Management, or related fields.
- Ability to work independently and maintain a high level of professionalism.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to provide customer service.
- Ability to track and analyze data, conduct research, and provide clear guidance.
- Knowledge of financial aid processes and student loans is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site position based in San Diego, California.
- Work hours are Monday through Friday, between 8 AM and 5 PM, with a flexible schedule determined by your supervisor.
- You may work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during school breaks.
- Compensation ranges from $18.27 to $24.62 per hour.
- This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited position.
