About the role#
University Enterprises, Inc. is hiring an Engineering Student Assistant to work in a learning capacity with the California Department of Transportation. You will work under the supervision of a Senior Bridge Engineer in Structure Construction. This is a part-time, on-site position based in Merced, California. You will gain experience in field settings, assisting with the construction inspection of public works projects including bridges and buildings.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the construction inspection of public works projects.
- Perform soil calculations and establish surveying control lines and grades.
- Verify field dimensions and ensure contractor materials meet contract requirements.
- Assist in the preparation of contract change orders and estimates.
- Perform technical calculations for grade, deflection, stress, alignment, and quantity estimates.
- Monitor concrete pours and curing processes.
- Coordinate with contractors regarding project plans, work quality, and safety regulations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student in Civil Engineering.
- Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Enrollment in at least six-semester units or nine-quarter units for undergraduate students.
- Demonstrated knowledge of stress analysis and strength of materials.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including outdoors in various weather conditions.
Location & details#
- Location: Merced, California.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Generally up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks.
- Compensation: $18.28 to $28.16 per hour.
