About the role#
Student Technicians work within the IT Networks department to provide client support for network operations. This role covers layers 1 through 3 of the OSI model. You will gain experience with system interconnects, network security, configuration, and IP schema.
What you'll do#
- Acknowledge tickets and handle network triage for Layers 1 and 2.
- Maintain 24/7 client support during your scheduled hours.
- Support staff during critical service restoration operations.
- Maintain, modify, and correct diagrams, documents, and records.
- Create or update listings in the CMDB and IBN using ServiceNow and NetBox.
- Handle Port Activation Requests within guided timelines and manage IP address requests.
- Perform vehicle maintenance, inspection, and cleaning.
- Manage storeroom organization, inventory, spare devices, and surplus collation.
- Attend team meetings and training sessions.
- Complete university mandatory yearly training and driver training.
What you'll need#
- Must be a degree-seeking student at The University of New Mexico.
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- State or government-issued ID and a valid driver's license.
- At least 1 year of work experience, including volunteer, customer service, or IT roles.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Visio or Lucid Chart, and terminal emulators like Putty, TeraTerm, or Termius.
- Introductory understanding of IT systems, network connections, and computer components.
- IT certifications such as A+ or Network+ are preferred.
