About the role#
The Chemistry Intern assists scientists in developing processes for the isolation, separation, and purification of targeted compounds from microbial and plant sources. This position offers hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, focusing on extraction, sample preparation, and purification methods.
What you'll do#
- Extract fermentation broths to generate crude extracts.
- Perform pre-fractionation of extracts and prepare samples for bioassays.
- Conduct bioassay-guided fractionation of crude extracts to isolate and identify active fractions.
- Develop sample preparation methods for the analysis of active compounds using HPLC.
- Prepare samples for bioassays and create necessary laboratory solutions.
- Operate standard laboratory equipment, such as balances, pipettes, and pH meters, with accuracy.
- Maintain a clean, safe laboratory environment and keep accurate, legible experimental records.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Chemistry, Biology, or Pharmaceutical Sciences program.
- General chemistry knowledge and the ability to follow experimental protocols.
- Capacity to read and interpret scientific literature.
- Basic computer proficiency, specifically in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to accurately use standard laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and pipettes.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting observations.

- Location: Davis, California (On-site).
- Term: Summer 2026.
- Status: Full-time, paid internship.
- Working conditions: This role occasionally requires lifting up to 50 pounds. Interns may be frequently exposed to water, insects, and air contaminants, and may work with toxic or caustic substances.
