    About the role#

    Prairie State Generating Company offers a summer internship for students interested in the power generation industry. This program provides hands-on training and exposure to operations in an active power plant. You will work alongside industry professionals on projects that support plant functionality.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist with plant operations, maintenance, and engineering projects focused on system optimization.
    • Support work on plant control systems, including PLCs and DCS, with oversight from system engineers.
    • Help maintain high, medium, and low voltage power systems.
    • Collect and interpret data to improve overall system efficiency.
    • Build your knowledge of P&IDs, electrical schematics, connection drawings, and one-lines.
    • Prepare and deliver a presentation on your project work to plant management at the end of the term.
    • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

    What you'll need#

    • Enrollment in a degree program for Electrical Engineering while in good academic standing.
    • Availability for a 12-13 week program from mid-May through mid-August 2027.
    • Understanding of safety and health hazards relevant to the work environment.
    • Ability to read operating procedures and Safety Data Sheets.
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently when needed.
    • Physical ability to climb ladders, enter confined spaces, wear respirators, and lift up to 25 pounds.
    • Basic knowledge of control and power systems is desired.
    • Proficiency in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is preferred.

    Location & details#

    • This is an on-site, paid position located in Illinois.
    • The role requires working in office, power plant, and coal mine environments where you may be exposed to industrial safety hazards and varying noise levels.
