About the role#
The Patient Financial Services Intern joins our team to learn the fundamental aspects of medical billing and collections. You will work under the guidance of the Manager of Patient Financial Services to gain experience with insurance payer requirements and the revenue cycle process. This position is part-time and located on-site in Tempe, Arizona.
What you'll do#
- Perform demographic and payer research to support the revenue cycle.
- Obtain eligibility information from insurance companies and government agencies.
- Process authorizations and discuss benefits or billing requirements.
- Coordinate with facilities and first responders to gather necessary billing information.
- Prepare and submit insurance claims via paper or electronic systems.
- Monitor claim status and follow up on unpaid, rejected, or underpaid claims.
- Document all collection activity and payer correspondence.
- Review medical documentation to assign accurate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
- Maintain knowledge of billing guidelines and coding changes.
- Protect patient confidentiality and follow all HIPAA regulations.
- Support company Safety Management Systems and comply with HS&E policies.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current participation in an education-related internship through a certified program.
- General knowledge of office procedures and office equipment.
- Basic PC skills, including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience using email and the web.
