About the role#
The Patient Financial Services Intern will receive training in the fundamental aspects of medical billing and collections. Under the guidance of the Manager of Patient Financial Services, you will learn about insurance payer requirements and patient advocacy. This role focuses on demographic and payer research to support the revenue cycle process.
What you'll do#
- Contact insurance and government agencies to verify eligibility and process authorizations.
- Communicate with facilities and first responders to gather demographic information.
- Prepare and submit insurance claims electronically and by paper.
- Monitor claim status and follow up on unpaid or rejected claims.
- Resolve denied, delayed, or underpaid claims with insurance companies.
- Document collection activity and payer correspondence.
- Review medical documentation to assign accurate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes.
- Maintain knowledge of coding changes, payer requirements, and billing guidelines.
- Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
- Support company Safety Management Systems and comply with HS&E policies.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current participation in an education-related internship through a certified program.
- General PC skills and knowledge of office equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
- Experience using email and the web.
