About the role#
As a Patient Financial Services Intern, you will receive training in the fundamental aspects of medical billing and collections. This role provides hands-on experience with insurance payer requirements, patient advocacy, and demographic research to support the revenue cycle. You will work under the guidance of the Manager of Patient Financial Services.
What you'll do#
- Receive training in medical billing and collections procedures.
- Contact insurance and government agencies to verify eligibility, process authorizations, and discuss benefits.
- Communicate with facilities and first responders to obtain accurate demographic information.
- Prepare and submit insurance claims both electronically and by paper.
- Monitor claim status and follow up on unpaid, rejected, denied, or underpaid claims.
- Document all collection activity and payer correspondence in the billing system.
- Assign accurate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses and services.
- Maintain knowledge of coding changes and payer requirements.
- Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
- Support company safety policies and procedures.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current participation in an education-related internship through a certified program.
- Familiarity with general office procedures and equipment.
- General PC skills, including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience using email and web browsers.
