    About the role#

    This co-op position offers hands-on experience with New York's bulk power system, wholesale electricity markets, and grid technologies. You will join the Research & Engineering team to evaluate Advanced Power Flow Control technologies, specifically focusing on the Static Series Synchronous Compensator. You will help determine if this device can be represented within the existing Business Management System framework.

    What you'll do#

    • Work with the Research & Engineering team to learn transmission modeling practices and the Business Management System framework.
    • Develop and run simulation scenarios to evaluate device behavior.
    • Support baseline case development and implement transmission impedance adjustments in test environments.
    • Execute and analyze SCUC, RTC, and RTD simulation studies.
    • Evaluate impacts on power flows, shift factors, transmission constraints, and market results.
    • Document your findings and prepare technical summaries for the team.
    • Collaborate with staff across Research & Engineering, Market Operations, and Grid Operations.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning skills.
    • Experience with data analysis, programming, or modeling tools like Python, MATLAB, or Excel.
    • Interest in power systems, optimization, grid operations, or electricity markets.
    • Ability to interpret technical information and communicate findings clearly.
    • Coursework related to power systems, optimization, or energy markets is a plus.

    Location & details#

    • This is a hybrid role based in Rensselaer, New York.
    • You must be local to the Albany, NY area and able to work onsite at least three days per week.
    • This is a paid, full-time position with a rolling term.
    • Offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screening and background check.
