About the role#
This internship provides hands-on experience with microbiology analyses and water resources management. You will support laboratory operations, assist with research, and ensure data reliability through quality control. This role involves both laboratory work and field activities related to water quality and lake monitoring. Interns work 20-25 hours per week during the school semester and up to 40 hours during the summer.
What you'll do#
- Support microbial instrumentation including microscopy, autoclave sterilization, and nutrient analysis.
- Assist with research, analytical method development, and the maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.
- Perform data entry in the Laboratory Information Management System and internal reporting software.
- Conduct field analysis for parameters such as chlorine, temperature, turbidity, and pH.
- Support lake monitoring activities, including remote probe maintenance and sampling.
- Identify algal populations and assist with cyanotoxin analysis.
- Provide operational assistance for water treatment tasks like jar testing.
- Help lab personnel coordinate with local and state agencies to protect drinking water sources.
- Provide backup support for organic and inorganic chemists.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a full-time degree-seeking program with at least one year of college completed.
- Major in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.
- Completed coursework in General Biology I and II.
- A valid driver license (minimum Class F).
- Ability to obtain a Missouri boater license within the first month of employment if born after January 1, 1984.
- Ability to perform initial demonstration of capabilities and attain certification for microbiological analysis.
- Preferred: Coursework or experience in limnology, stream ecology, or phycology.
- Preferred: Understanding of environmental sciences and water quality.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform field work including operating a boat and trailer.

- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm.
