About the role#
The NYISO is seeking a Co-Op student to join the System & Resource Planning department. You will assist in the development, maintenance, and validation of short-circuit and dynamic power system models. This role involves reviewing current modeling workflows, building automation scripts, and supporting the data collection necessary for system-planning studies. You will work alongside teams in Reliability Studies, Generation Integration, and Interconnection Coordination to ensure the accuracy of the models that support the New York electricity system.
What you'll do#
- Learn the processes for developing and validating short-circuit and dynamic power system models.
- Build scripts to automate recurring data-management and modeling tasks.
- Review existing workflows and suggest improvements.
- Assist with the maintenance and enhancement of planning databases.
- Review legacy inverter-based resource models for inclusion in the short-circuit database.
- Support the development of an on-demand dynamic database-building capability.
- Help connect steady-state, dynamic, and master-tracking data.
- Identify and resolve data-quality issues.
- Document your scripts, modeling procedures, and findings.
What you'll need#
- You are currently pursuing a senior-level Bachelor’s, Master’s, or doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering.
- A concentration or demonstrated interest in power systems engineering is preferred.
- Experience with scripting and automation.
- An interest in system planning, power system modeling, or electrical-grid analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Comfort working with technical data and databases.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to data quality.
- The ability to learn specialized modeling tools.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with internal teams.
Location & details#
- This is a hybrid position based in Rensselaer, New York. You should be local to the Albany area.
- This is a paid, full-time co-op position with a rolling term.
- Offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screening and background check.
