About the role#
Northrop Grumman is seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern to join the Navigation, Intelligence, and Connectivity (NIC) division. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Woodland Hills, California, for the summer of 2027.
What you'll do#
- Assist senior engineers in designing, analyzing, and iterating on navigation and mission-support hardware components.
- Perform dimensional, material, and vibration analyses using engineering software.
- Fabricate test articles and validate design concepts through rapid prototyping, 3-D printing, and CNC machining.
- Conduct laboratory testing, including thermal, environmental, and structural tests.
- Compile design documentation, bills of materials, and assembly instructions.
- Support hardware integration efforts with avionics and software teams.
- Contribute to cost, schedule, and risk assessments.
- Engage in design reviews and provide feedback on models and test results.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related STEM degree, with plans to remain enrolled in Fall 2027.
- Availability to work 40 hours per week for at least 10 weeks during summer 2027.
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
- A cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.0 or higher.
- Experience with CAD design and modeling for aerospace components.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis and structural testing protocols.
- Proficiency in rapid prototyping and a basic understanding of additive manufacturing.
- Knowledge of MIL STD 810, MIL STD 461, or AS9100 quality systems.
- Prior internship or project experience in a defense or aerospace environment.
