About the role#
Beyond New Horizons offers a full-time summer internship at the Tunnel 9 facility in Silver Spring, Maryland. This unit of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex provides aerodynamic simulation for hypersonic systems at speeds from Mach 7 to Mach 18. Interns work alongside experienced engineers and scientists to complete projects, gain practical experience, and support Air Force missions. The program lasts 12 weeks from May to August.
What you'll do#
- Operate and conduct tests in the R&D Mach 3 tunnel and install test article hardware.
- Validate data-acquisition system configurations and conduct pre-test instrumentation integrity checks.
- Support the development and application of temperature-sensitive paint, infrared thermography, and piezoelectric force-balance instrumentation.
- Develop graphical user interfaces to analyze and decode tunnel-facility data.
- Create and modify electrical schematics using AutoCAD and research power load-bank systems.
- Develop or modify programmable logic controller ladder logic and human-machine interface screens.
- Configure digital servo amplifiers and perform system integration, troubleshooting, and work-instruction improvements.
- Create 3D models of subsystem components in PTC Creo and design 3D-printed fixtures.
- Conduct material, structural, and thermo-structural analyses using ANSYS.
- Perform field verification of hydraulic-unit drawings and engineering checks of control schematics.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited university pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer, Industrial, or Aerospace Engineering, or Computer/Software Engineering.
- Minimum sophomore status with 45 credit hours completed by May 2027.
- Minimum GPA of 2.75.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week for the 12-week duration.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance and AEDC local area network access.
- Familiarity with PTC Creo, AutoCAD, ANSYS, Excel, MATLAB, or 3D-printing processes.
- Ability to read, create, and modify mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
- Strong communication skills and a self-driven, adaptable approach to work.
