About the role#
The COLUMBIA Electrical Systems Directorate manages the design and delivery of electrical components for the COLUMBIA Class submarine. Interns support the engineering team in ensuring these systems meet performance requirements for the United States Navy. You will gain experience in construction support and the development of a new submarine class.
What you'll do#
- Review electrical system drawings for technical adequacy.
- Troubleshoot systems currently under construction or undergoing testing.
- Oversee component vendors to ensure they meet procurement and military specifications.
- Evaluate power distribution systems and cableway designs.
- Review test procedures and create drawings for test equipment.
- Develop and review technical manuals.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student in a Bachelor or Masters program in Electrical, Electronics, Nuclear, Power Systems, Mechatronics, Biomedical, Aerospace, Energy Systems Engineering, or Physics.
- Completion of at least your Freshman year before the start of the internship.
- US citizenship and the ability to pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
- Availability to work 40 hours per week for at least eight consecutive weeks between May 2027 and September 2027.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Ability to arrange your own housing and transportation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.

- This is a paid, full-time, on-site internship.
- Placements occur in Groton, CT, New London, CT, North Stonington, CT, or North Kingstown, RI.
