About the role#
The Nebraska Department of Transportation is hiring student interns for the Traffic Engineering Division. This role offers hands-on work experience while you complete your college degree. You will work on projects within the Traffic Control or Traffic Analysis sections. Interns are expected to work at least 10 hours per week during the school year, with the option to work up to 40 hours during summer and school breaks. This is a paid, part-time position.
What you'll do#
- Draft highway junction plans for internal use.
- Assist with traffic control, pavement marking, and signing plans for minor design projects.
- Support traffic signal control plans and related activities.
- Assist with traffic studies, including data collection, collision diagrams, and basic data entry.
- Research and compile data for special requests.
- Create visual displays to support traffic studies.
- Perform basic capacity analysis.
- Help other sections of the Traffic Engineering Division as needed.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a three-fourths time student in good standing.
- A major in a field related to transportation engineering.
- Two years of higher education in the transportation engineering field is preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, or Access.
- Experience with computer-aided drafting software like MicroStation or AutoCAD.
- Familiarity with Synchro or similar traffic software.
- Knowledge of highway and street design, traffic control signing, and related regulations.
- Experience with data queries, analysis, and summarizing results.
- Effective communication skills and a strong work ethic.
