About the role#
This internship with the Nebraska Department of Transportation supports the Strategic Planning Division and the Performance Management Unit. You will assist with technical writing, project management coordination, and data visualization. This role is designed for students interested in applying their academic background in communications, business, or analytics to real-world transportation initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Draft and edit technical reports, standard operating procedures, and strategic planning documents.
- Prepare written briefs, executive summaries, and presentation materials.
- Review division documentation for clarity, consistency, and compliance.
- Conduct literature reviews regarding transportation industry best practices.
- Help project managers track timelines, action items, deliverables, and milestone progress.
- Coordinate meeting agendas, compile background packets, record minutes, and follow up with task owners.
- Document and map internal operational workflows.
- Maintain project documentation repositories and track stakeholder inquiries.
- Transform transportation data into charts, infographics, and visual dashboards.
- Support the collection, monitoring, and updating of Key Performance Indicators.
- Assist in testing and troubleshooting business intelligence reporting tools.
- Translate data findings into visual summaries to assist executive decision-making.
What you'll need#
- You must be a student in good standing with junior class rank or higher.
- Your major should be in English, Professional Communication, Business Administration, Project Management, Public Administration, Business Analytics, Transportation Studies, or a related field.
- Strong skills in written communication, document formatting, and technical editing.
- Interest or coursework in project management, organizational management, or public policy.
- Experience or interest in data visualization, performance measurement, or business intelligence.
- Familiarity with dashboard tools like Power BI, Tableau, or advanced Excel charting.
- A demonstrated record of teamwork and organizational skills.
- Ability to work at least 10 hours per week while classes are in session.

- This position is located at the NDOT Central Complex in Lincoln, Nebraska.
- The role is on-site and part-time.
- Hiring is on a rolling basis.
