About the role#
This summer internship offers hands-on experience in plastics formulation, testing, and data-driven product development. You will work under the guidance of a mentor to design experiments, analyze data, and use AI tools to optimize formulations. This is a full-time, paid position based on-site in Pearl River, New York.
What you'll do#
- Receive training on plastics processing equipment, including extruders and blown-film lines.
- Prepare polymer formulations with processing additives and evaluate their performance.
- Develop and refine testing protocols for film-processing equipment.
- Improve characterization methods to quantify how processing aids affect material properties.
- Apply AI, machine learning, and data-analysis tools to experimental datasets.
- Use data-driven methods to identify trends, predict performance, and optimize product compositions.
- Document modeling approaches and results to support future product development.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Plastics Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
- Availability to work 40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks between May and August.
- Basic laboratory and data-analysis experience, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to follow laboratory safety requirements and experimental procedures.
- Interest in plastics processing, material characterization, and AI-assisted formulation.
- Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, or statistical analysis is preferred.
- You must be enrolled in school at the time of application and for at least one semester after the internship concludes.
