About the role#
As a Simulation Engineering Intern, you will use modeling, simulation, and programming to evaluate engine and propulsion-system behavior. You will not work on theoretical exercises. Instead, you will work alongside engineers to answer real questions about engine performance and compare your predictions against physical test data. This role involves seeing a simulation move from a computer model to hardware on a test stand.
What you'll do#
- Develop and modify simulation models to evaluate engine behavior across different operating conditions and design configurations.
- Apply engineering fundamentals to understand thermodynamic, thermal, fluid, structural, or system-level behavior.
- Run simulations, evaluate outputs, and use engineering judgment to identify trends or unexpected results.
- Explore design alternatives and evaluate performance tradeoffs.
- Analyze simulation and experimental datasets to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Compare simulation predictions against physical test results and investigate differences between predicted and measured behavior.
- Refine models based on test data and create clear plots, calculations, and summaries to support engineering decisions.
- Write scripts and tools in Python, MATLAB, or similar languages to automate repetitive simulation and data-processing tasks.
- Collaborate with mechanical, combustion, controls, and test engineers to connect simulation results with physical hardware.
- Participate in technical discussions, design reviews, and document your modeling approaches, assumptions, and conclusions.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or structural mechanics.
- Understanding of the fundamental operating principles of internal combustion engines.
- Experience using at least one engineering simulation or analysis tool such as ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, GT-Power, COMSOL, Abaqus, STAR-CCM+, or Fluent.
- Programming or scripting experience with Python, MATLAB, C++, or a similar language.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to engineering work.
- Ability to document technical work clearly and learn new software or computational methods quickly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
- You must be available to work on-site 5 days per week in Suffield, Connecticut.
- Relocation assistance is not available.
