About the role#
LiquidPiston is hiring an Engine Test Engineering Intern for the Summer 2027 term. This is a full-time, paid position based on-site in Suffield, Connecticut. You will work directly with our engineering teams to support engine testing, data collection, and hardware development as we advance our rotary engine technology.
What you'll do#
- Support the setup, execution, and monitoring of engine and subsystem tests on dynos and laboratory test stands.
- Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot instrumentation including thermocouples, pressure sensors, and flow meters.
- Prepare engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, and supporting hardware for testing.
- Collect, organize, and analyze engine performance data.
- Troubleshoot and perform root-cause analysis on mechanical, thermal, and combustion issues.
- Assist with the fabrication and modification of test fixtures, plumbing, and support equipment.
- Document test procedures and contribute to post-test reporting.
- Collaborate with mechanical design, controls, manufacturing, and simulation teams.
- Maintain safe and organized test cell operations.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Bachelor or Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
- A strong interest in engines, thermodynamics, propulsion systems, and experimental testing.
- Hands-on experience with tools, fabrication, assembly, or laboratory work.
- A basic understanding of internal combustion engines, fluid systems, and heat transfer.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues in a practical environment.
- U.S. person status is preferred.
- Experience with engine dyno testing, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, motorsports, UAVs, robotics, or propulsion projects is a plus.
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems, sensors, LabVIEW, CAN communication, or controls systems.
- Experience with instrumentation, wiring, and calibration.
- Basic CAD experience using SolidWorks or similar software.
- Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, or Excel for data analysis.
- Previous internship, lab, or co-op experience in automotive, aerospace, energy, or mechanical testing environments.
