About the role#
As an Engine Performance Intern, you will work directly with our engineering team to develop rotary engines. You will participate in the full cycle of engine testing, from planning experiments to analyzing data and recommending design changes. This role is for those who enjoy experimental work and want to understand the physics behind engine behavior.
What you'll do#
- Plan, set up, and execute engine performance tests in laboratory and test cell environments.
- Use AI tools to assist with test planning and data processing.
- Analyze data to evaluate power, torque, fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, and emissions.
- Identify performance issues and investigate root causes using engineering fundamentals.
- Support engine calibration and optimization by adjusting operating parameters.
- Develop tools in Python, MATLAB, or Excel to visualize and analyze large datasets.
- Assist with instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition systems.
- Troubleshoot test setups and unexpected engine behavior.
- Collaborate with design and controls engineers to connect test results to development decisions.
- Document test procedures, findings, and technical analysis.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Automotive, or a related engineering field.
- Strong academic foundation in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, or combustion.
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, Excel, or LabVIEW.
- Familiarity with engine dynamometers, sensors, and data acquisition systems.
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting mechanical or electrical systems.
- Understanding of engine performance metrics and combustion fundamentals.
- Experience with Formula SAE, Baja SAE, EcoCAR, robotics, or other hands-on engineering projects.
- Ability to work collaboratively and take ownership of assigned tasks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Location & details#
- This position is located on-site in Suffield, Connecticut.
- You must be able to work on-site five days per week.
- This is a full-time, paid internship for the Winter 2027 term.
