About the role#
Kiewit is hiring a Substation Engineer Intern for the Summer 2027 term. You will join the Power Engineering team to support substation, transmission, and distribution projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV. This role focuses on applying engineering principles to both detailed design and EPC projects.
What you'll do#
- Create design documents and drawings, including wiring diagrams and bills of materials.
- Apply field mark-ups to project as-built drawings.
- Assist with engineering calculations for relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuits.
- Use engineering software for ground grid design, relay coordination, and transformer sizing.
- Review project schedules and maintain document management systems.
- Coordinate project activities with project engineers and client representatives.
- Identify potential project problems and propose solutions.
- Apply corporate standard engineering practices while maintaining high standards for quality and accuracy.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, three-phase power systems, and per-unit mathematics.
- Familiarity with substation components and design documents.
- Understanding of engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
- Proficiency with standard word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
- Ability to work safely and productively in a team environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
