About the role#
Kiewit is hiring a Substation Engineer Intern for the Summer 2027 term. You will join our Power Engineering team in The Woodlands, Texas, to support substation, transmission, and distribution projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV. This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship.
What you'll do#
- Create design documents, drawings, and bills of materials.
- Develop wiring diagrams from schematics and apply field mark-ups to as-built drawings.
- Perform engineering support tasks including relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit calculations.
- Use specialized software for ground grid design, relay coordination, and transformer sizing.
- Review project schedules and collaborate with project engineers to keep tasks on track.
- Coordinate project activities with team members and customer representatives.
- Manage project documentation using our internal system.
- Take ownership of your work quality and identify potential project problems or solutions.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- A power background and a GPA above 3.0 are preferred.
- Basic knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, three-phase power systems, and per-unit mathematics.
- Familiarity with substation components and their functions.
- Understanding of engineering standards such as NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI.
- Proficiency with standard word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
- Ability to work effectively within a team and communicate clearly with others.
