The Refugee Youth Program supports the development of recently arrived refugee and immigrant children and youth in New Jersey. This internship focuses on helping students adapt to the school system, supporting their social-emotional well-being, and assisting with English language development and academic preparation. Interns work directly with youth, their families, and local schools to facilitate year-round programming.
What you'll do#
- Assist the Youth Programs Coordinator with the design and implementation of afterschool programming, including youth mentoring, workshops, tutoring, and teen service days.
- Conduct outreach to parents and students regarding program details.
- Provide or secure interpretation services to ensure effective communication.
- Create and translate flyers and documents for youth programs.
- Input case notes into internal platforms.
- Support staff in welcoming and accompanying students at afterschool programs.
- Participate in team meetings, workshops, and staff development sessions.
- Assess and monitor family needs under the supervision of the Youth Program Specialist.
What you'll need#
- Fluency in a second language is required (e.g., Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, or Dari).
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in social work, education, public health, psychology, sociology, communications, or related fields.
- Experience working with children and youth in educational or social programs.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and patience.
- Experience working with refugee or immigrant populations is highly desirable.

- Location: Elizabeth, New Jersey.
- Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: 15-20 hours per week.
- Status: Unpaid internship.
