About the role#
The Youth Programming Intern supports the Refugee Youth Program at the International Rescue Committee in Elizabeth. This role assists with the school adjustment process for newly arrived refugee and immigrant youth. You will work directly with students and their families to support their educational and social-emotional development.
What you'll do#
- Assist the Youth Programs Coordinator with the design and implementation of afterschool programming, including tutoring, workshops, and mentoring.
- Conduct outreach to parents and students to share information about youth programs.
- Provide or secure interpretation services to ensure clear communication with families.
- Create and translate program flyers and documents.
- Input case notes into internal platforms.
- Welcome and support students during afterschool sessions.
- Assess family needs and make appropriate referrals under the supervision of the Youth Program Specialist.
- Participate in team meetings and staff development workshops.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in social work, education, public health, or a related field.
- Fluency in a second language is required.
- Experience working with children and youth.
- Experience working with refugee or immigrant populations is highly desirable.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including patience and empathy.
- Commitment to 15 to 20 hours per week.
