Immigration Legal Services Intern

About the role#

The Immigration Legal Services Department in Silver Spring, Maryland, provides low-cost immigration services, including assistance with green card applications, work authorization, naturalization, and family reunification. This internship offers hands-on experience in humanitarian legal support and community outreach.

What you'll do#

• Assist clients with requirements for consultations and application sessions with legal staff.
• Answer client questions regarding immigration services and refer them to appropriate staff when necessary.
• Provide general administrative support, including tracking, filing, and mailing documents, applications, and notices.
• Input and update client information in the Lolly Law database under the guidance of the Immigration Services Manager.
• Assist clients with document translation, authentication, and completion.
• Research immigration issues, policies, and programs.
• Promote the immigration department through local and online networks and build partnerships with local agencies.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a college degree program related to international relief, humanitarian work, or refugee law (or within 12 months of graduation).
• Passion for working with limited-English speaking refugees.
• Interest in or work experience with U.S. immigration law and outreach.
• Proficiency in a second language is a plus, with Spanish strongly preferred; skills in French, Dari, or Pashto are also valued.
• Excellent research, database management, and record-keeping skills.

Location & details#

• Location: Silver Spring, Maryland (On-site).
• Term: Fall 2026 (September – December).
• Commitment: Minimum of 15 hours per week (up to 30 hours per week).
• Orientation: Mandatory in-person orientation on September 7th, 2026.
• Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. A per diem reimbursement of $15/day may be available to offset food and travel costs.
