About the role#
The Brennan Center for Justice is seeking law students for the Liberty and National Security Program. This internship focuses on advancing national security policies that uphold constitutional values and the rule of law. You will work on program priorities such as reforming emergency powers, ensuring congressional oversight of executive action, and protecting First and Fourth Amendment rights. This is a full-time, paid, on-site position based in either New York City or Washington, D.C. for the summer of 2027.
What you'll do#
Interns work directly with staff on ongoing policy advocacy, research, and litigation. Your daily tasks may include:
- Conducting legal, policy, and factual research to support advocacy at federal, state, and local levels.
- Assisting with litigation in trial and appellate courts.
- Drafting legal research and writing for amicus briefs, policy reports, and other advocacy documents.
- Preparing communications for legislators and assisting with public comments to federal agencies.
- Attending coalition meetings and drafting posts for the organization's website.
- Contributing to public education and scholarship efforts.
