About the role#
The Brennan Center for Justice is hiring law students for the Liberty and National Security Program. This summer internship takes place in our New York City or Washington, DC offices. You will work directly with staff on policy advocacy, research, and litigation initiatives. The program focuses on national security policies that respect the rule of law and constitutional values.
What you'll do#
Interns contribute to our ongoing advocacy and research efforts. Your daily work may include:
- Conducting legal, policy, and factual research.
- Assisting with litigation in trial and appellate courts.
- Drafting legal research and writing for amicus briefs.
- Preparing policy reports and other advocacy documents.
- Drafting communications for legislators and public comments for federal agencies.
- Attending coalition meetings.
- Drafting posts for the Brennan Center website.
- Supporting public education and scholarship.
What you'll need#
We look for law students who bring initiative, imagination, and versatility to their work. You should have excellent skills in legal research, analysis, and writing. A genuine interest in democracy and justice issues is essential. We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every qualification listed.
Location & details#
This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship for Summer 2027. The program runs for 10 weeks from June through August. Interns work Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm EST. Stipends are provided through the Les Fagen Legal Internship Program, with amounts set at $8,360 for 1Ls and $9,360 for 2Ls for the 10-week term. Pro-rated adjustments apply for different timeframes or hours.
