    About the role#

    The Immigration Legal Services Intern will gain hands-on experience by supporting the International Rescue Committee in providing legal services to refugees, asylees, and immigrants. This role offers exposure to the policies and procedures of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Department of Homeland Security. Interns will work under the guidance of immigration staff to assist with applications for naturalization, family reunification, and adjustment of status.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist clients with the completion of specific immigration applications and forms.
    • Conduct client intake forms using basic interviewing techniques to gather information and build trust.
    • Track, file, and mail relevant documents, applications, and notices of action.
    • Maintain immigration databases and records.
    • Ensure that translation services are available to clients throughout the immigration process.
    • Complete special research or other projects as assigned.

    What you'll need#

    • Prior experience or a demonstrated interest in law or providing nonprofit legal services.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong writing skills with the ability to maintain clear and accurate case notes.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and web-based database tools.
    • Fluency in English is required.
    • Ability to learn new immigration processes quickly.

    Location & details#

    • This is a hybrid internship based in Baltimore, Maryland, requiring a mix of office, remote, and field work.
    • Interns must be able to work from the office at least 3 days per week.
    • The term runs for 14 weeks, from September 14, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
    • A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week is required.
    • This position is unpaid, though eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15 per day to offset travel and food costs.
    • An IRC laptop will be provided for the duration of the internship.
