About the role#
The Children's Legal Services (CLS) Intern will support unaccompanied youth who have entered the United States without a parent or legal guardian and are currently facing removal proceedings in immigration court. This role involves working closely with CLS staff to assist with case management, legal research, and direct client support. This is an unpaid, on-site internship based in Silver Spring, Maryland, for the Fall 2026 term.
What you'll do#
- Assist CLS staff in providing services to clients, including setting up consultations and drafting immigration applications under the supervision of an immigration attorney.
- Perform research on factual, legal, and social service issues.
- Monitor the status of clients' immigration court removal proceedings.
- Sort, scan, and file documents to maintain accurate case files.
- Provide follow-up communication to clients and support social service referrals.
What you'll need#
- Undergraduate level studies or equivalent experience in public service or community work.
- A strong desire to help immigrant youth in Maryland.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and maintain high attention to detail.
- Competency in Microsoft Office, data tracking, and file management.
- Proficiency in Spanish is a plus but not required.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment with patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
Location & details#
- Location: Silver Spring, Maryland (On-site).
- Term: Fall 2026 (September through December).
- Commitment: Minimum of 15 hours per week, with a preference for those available to work up to 37.5 hours per week.
- Compensation: This internship is unpaid. Interns may be eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15 per day to offset food and travel costs.
