    About the role#

    The Children's Legal Services (CLS) intern supports unaccompanied youth who entered the United States without a parent or legal guardian. Many of these clients face deportation or removal in immigration court. You will work under the supervision of an immigration attorney to assist with case management and client services. This role requires an in-person commitment at our Silver Spring office.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist CLS staff with setting up consultations and drafting immigration applications.
    • Perform research on factual, legal, and social service issues.
    • Monitor the status of clients in immigration court removal proceedings.
    • Handle clerical duties including sorting, scanning, and filing documents in case files.
    • Provide follow-up communication to clients.
    • Support clients with research and referrals for social services.

    What you'll need#

    • Undergraduate level studies or equivalent experience in public service community work.
    • A strong desire to help immigrant youth in Maryland.
    • Ability to work independently with high attention to detail and good judgment.
    • Competency in Microsoft Office, data tracking, and file management.
    • Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
    • Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
    • Spanish language proficiency is helpful but not required.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Silver Spring, Maryland.
    • Term: Fall 2026 (September through December).
    • Commitment: Minimum 15 hours per week, with a preference for those available for 37.5 hours.
    • Orientation: Required attendance on September 7, 2026, from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM.
    • Status: This internship is unpaid. Interns may be eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15 per day to offset food and travel costs.
