About the role#
The Children's Legal Services (CLS) Intern will support staff in providing legal services to unaccompanied youth who have entered the United States without a parent or legal guardian and are facing removal proceedings in immigration court. This role involves direct case management support, administrative documentation, and factual research to assist in asylum and immigration applications. Interns will gain exposure to U.S. immigration law and develop professional skills in client services and case management.
What you'll do#
- Assist CLS staff in setting up client consultations and drafting immigration applications under the supervision of an immigration attorney.
- Conduct research on factual, legal, and social service issues to support client cases.
- Monitor the status of clients' immigration court removal proceedings.
- Perform clerical duties including sorting, scanning, and filing documents to maintain up-to-date case files.
- Provide follow-up communication to clients and assist with research and referrals.
- Adhere to organizational policies regarding client confidentiality and privacy.
What you'll need#
- Undergraduate level studies or equivalent experience in public service community work.
- A strong desire to help immigrant youth in Maryland.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and maintain high attention to detail.
- Competency in Microsoft Office, data tracking, and file management.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
- Proficiency in Spanish is a plus but not required.
Location & details#
- Location: Silver Spring, Maryland.
- Term: Fall 2026 (September through December).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Minimum 15 hours per week, with a preference for 37.5 hours per week.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship position.
