About the role#
The Software Innovation Lab at IBM is seeking a Research Scientist Intern to join our team for the Summer 2027 term. You will work within our R&D group to conduct end-to-end research that delivers real-world AI impact. This role involves working in small, mentored teams to solve complex problems, build prototypes, and contribute to both academic publications and patent applications.
What you'll do#
- Advance state-of-the-art agent architectures and domain-specific models for business processes, IT and industrial automation, and software engineering.
- Engage in the full research lifecycle, from identifying core challenges and designing prototypes to validating solutions through rigorous experimentation.
- Develop responsible AI systems and enterprise-grade benchmarks.
- Conduct research in areas such as foundation models, multimodal AI, enterprise knowledge graphs, AI security, and agentic systems.
- Shepherd projects from initial ideation to completion.
- Share significant findings through peer-reviewed publications and patent applications.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or Computer Engineering.
- Hands-on experience and theoretical foundations in areas like foundation models, agentic systems, knowledge graphs, or distributed systems.
- Proficiency in Python for rapid prototyping and implementing large-scale machine learning systems.
- Advanced expertise in ML frameworks, specifically PyTorch, and full-cycle development of algorithms.
- Strong publication record in top-tier conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, or AAAI.
- Experience with generative AI and LLMs, ranging from training to testing.
- Demonstrated ability to deconstruct complex research problems and present technical concepts clearly.
- A commitment to rigorous, reproducible, and well-documented research practices.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship.
- The work modality is hybrid.
- Positions are available in Yorktown Heights, New York, and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Program dates are May 24, 2027 to August 13, 2027 for semester students, or June 14, 2027 to September 3, 2027 for quarter system students.
