About the role#
Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is seeking an Engineering Intern to support projects in our Montgomery and Birmingham offices. This is a full-time, paid internship with a rolling term. You will work on-site, splitting your time between the office and field locations. This role is designed to help you gain practical experience while contributing to our ongoing design and engineering projects.
What you'll do#
- Prepare reports, site plans, permit documents, and construction schedules.
- Apply technical skills to routine projects with minimal supervision.
- Direct technicians in the production of engineering documents.
- Coordinate cross-discipline checks and review project documents for quality assurance.
- Report risk management issues to the Project Engineer.
- Assist with defining scope of work issues alongside consultants and contractors.
- Prepare technical memorandums under the supervision of the Engineer-of-Record.
- Present project information in both oral and written formats.
- Respond to inquiries from clients and regulatory agencies.
- Participate in individual development programs and contribute to the client services team.
- Engage in local professional societies and community service activities.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor or Master degree program in Civil Engineering at an ABET accredited university.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD software.
- Experience with Civil3D is preferred.
- Foundations of Engineering (EIT) certificate is a plus.
- Prior experience in A/E or EPC environments is a plus.

- Locations: Montgomery, AL and Birmingham, AL.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Travel: Approximately 20% of the role involves field work, which may include exposure to various weather conditions and environments. Protective gear is required for field assignments.
