About the role#
The Mechanical, Structures, and Systems Engineering Directorate designs the hull and internal structures for the COLUMBIA Class submarine. This program offers students practical experience working on the next generation of sea-based strategic deterrence submarines. You will work alongside senior staff to support the design, build, and sustainment of various fluid and mechanical systems.
What you'll do#
- Perform engineering calculations.
- Develop and review technical designs.
- Select and evaluate materials.
- Analyze arrangement studies.
- Support the resolution of vendor issues.
- Perform ship checks and document as-built conditions within the shipyard.
- Resolve ongoing design and construction issues.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student in a Bachelor or Masters program for Mechanical, Aerospace, Aeronautical, Naval Architecture, Civil, Structural, Systems, Ocean, or Marine Engineering.
- Completion of your freshman year before the internship starts.
- US citizenship and the ability to pass a background check and medically supervised drug screen.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Location & details#
- Location: Groton, Connecticut.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Commitment: 40 hours per week for at least eight consecutive weeks between May and September 2027.
- Modality: This is an on-site position. Interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation.
