About the role#
Duke Energy offers a 16-week Engineering Co-op program for the Winter 2027 term. This full-time position allows students to gain hands-on experience by rotating through various departments. You will work with experienced staff engineers to support projects related to transmission, distribution, renewable energy, and environmental compliance. We encourage participants to complete at least two non-contiguous co-op sessions to build a comprehensive understanding of our operations and prepare for potential full-time placement after graduation.
What you'll do#
Depending on your assigned department, you may perform the following tasks:
- Manage equipment reliability and perform design analysis for transmission lines, substations, and electrical components.
- Support electric distribution design, system planning, operations, asset management, and project management.
- Assist with grid planning, sectionalization, and equipment installation or replacement.
- Develop, construct, and startup renewable energy and power generation technologies.
- Conduct inspection and oversight for groundwater remediation and environmental projects.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations, permits, and licensing requirements.
- Perform transmission-level analysis, model development, and contingency analysis for generator additions.
- Collaborate on projects focused on generation facility safety, system performance, and cost efficiency.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, or Environmental Engineering.
- Graduation date no earlier than May 2027.
- A cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or higher (3.0 preferred).
- Availability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the full 16-week duration.
- Previous engineering work experience.
- Technical proficiency with computers, software, and relevant engineering applications.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proven ability to prioritize tasks, make decisions, and work effectively within diverse teams.

- Modality: Positions may be remote, hybrid, or on-site depending on the specific role and department.
- Requirements: A valid driver’s license may be required for some roles. You may be exposed to mechanical, electrical, or noisy environments and must be prepared to wear required personal protective equipment. Certain roles may require security clearance for unescorted access.
