About the role#
Duke Energy offers an Engineering Internship and Co-op Program for the summer of 2027. This full-time program provides hands-on experience across various departments, including Transmission, Distribution, Environmental Health and Safety, Regulated and Renewable Energy, Project Management and Construction, Natural Gas, and Nuclear. Interns work on real-world projects alongside experienced engineers to support the company's energy generation and grid operations.
What you'll do#
- Manage equipment reliability and maintain distribution assets.
- Perform analysis and design for transmission lines, structures, and protection systems.
- Assist with grid planning, sectionalization, and equipment installation or replacement.
- Provide oversight of distribution systems.
- Support environmental projects, including groundwater remediation, monitoring, and regulatory permitting.
- Work on generation facility safety, performance, reliability, and cost compliance.
- Develop, design, and construct new power generation assets.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an ABET-accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Nuclear, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, or Industrial and Systems Engineering, or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology.
- Expected graduation date no earlier than August 2027.
- Cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or higher (3.0 or higher preferred).
- Technical proficiency in engineering applications such as CAD, MATLAB, PSS/E, Power World, MFAD, or STAAD Pro.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a team and manage project timelines.
- Previous engineering work experience is preferred.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license for certain roles.
Location & details#
- Locations include Charlotte and Arden, NC; Owensville, Plainfield, Cayuga, and Noblesville, IN; Ocala and Lake Mary, FL; Cincinnati, OH; Union, KY; Edwardsport, IN; Raleigh and Goldsboro, NC.
- Work modality includes both hybrid and on-site opportunities.
- The program is a full-time, paid internship.
- Positions require a 40-hour work week over a 10-12 week period.
