About the role#
This is a paid, full-time internship for Summer 2027. You will work within the Relay Construction and Maintenance department, which maintains protective relays and SCADA control systems for our substation and transmission facilities. You will work alongside Journeymen and Apprentice level Relay Technicians to learn the technical skills and safety behaviors required for this profession.
What you'll do#
- Learn the fundamentals of relaying, protective schemes, controls, alarms, distribution SCADA, and communications.
- Write basic isolation procedures.
- Use print reading and the red mark process.
- Understand RTS usage and NERC compliance requirements.
- Build basic troubleshooting skills.
- Develop a methodical approach to arranging activities and tasks.
- Gain an understanding of CT and VT circuits.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a four or two-year degree program in Engineering Technology or a related major.
- Completion of at least 12 credit hours, including Introduction to Electrical Utilities, Electrical Utility Print Reading, and Physics/Trig for Relay Technicians.
- A cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must not graduate before August 2027.
- A valid driver license.
- Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Preferred: A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and experience with CAD software.
- Preferred: Strong communication skills, leadership qualities, and a desire to work in the energy industry.
Location & details#
- Locations: Plainfield, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio.
- This is an on-site role. You must have reliable transportation to the facility.
- You may be exposed to electrical, mechanical, or noisy hazards.
- You must be able to wear personal protective equipment, lift 50 pounds, and work at heights or from suspended platforms.
