About the role#
This internship provides practical experience supporting electric transmission and distribution substation projects. You will work alongside engineers, designers, and project managers to support the development of physical design engineering packages. The role balances office-based design work with field visits to gain exposure to utility operations and infrastructure.
What you'll do#
- Support the development of physical design engineering packages for substations.
- Perform engineering calculations and technical analysis.
- Assist with 3D modeling of a data center substation using Autodesk Inventor.
- Participate in substation field visits led by experienced engineers.
- Support engineering studies and technical evaluations.
- Engage in job-shadowing opportunities with various engineering groups.
- Develop and present safety topics during group staff meetings.
- Perform root cause analyses for lessons learned from field issues.
What you'll need#
- Full-time student status in an Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering program (ABET accredited or non-ABET accredited) or an ABET accredited Preparation Engineering Program.
- Expected graduation date of Spring 2027 or later.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, fundamentals, and theory.
- Familiarity with basic system protection practices and relays.
- Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
- Strong time management, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.

- Location: Glen Allen, Virginia.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (3-2 schedule).
- Employment: Full-time, paid internship.
