About the role#
The NCSG Aerospace Methods & Automations Internship is a collaborative summer program sponsored by the North Carolina Space Grant and Collier Aerospace. You will join our Methods & Automations team in Raleigh to gain hands-on experience with industry aircraft designs, computer programming, and software development. You will work under the mentorship of our engineering team to support our structural analysis software, HyperX.
What you'll do#
- Learn textbook analysis methods and convert them into code for the HyperX application.
- Use HyperX and other industry-standard CAE software for structural analysis, design, and sizing optimization of airframes and space vehicles.
- Use scripting APIs to build tools and automate engineering tasks.
- Conduct trade studies focused on weight savings and part producibility.
- Perform preliminary and detail design and analysis, documenting your results throughout the process.
- Resolve project issues as they arise and escalate urgent technical problems to software or engineering leads.
What you'll need#
- You must be a US citizen.
- You are currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Computer Science.
- You have completed coursework in Statics, Strength of Materials, Composites, and Finite Element Analysis.
- You can perform structural analysis and design using metal or composite materials.
- You have experience with classical stress analysis using closed-form methods.
- You understand structural failure modes like material strength, buckling, and crippling.
- You have experience in software development, including the use of version control tools like Git.
- Proficiency in C#, C++, Python, or Fortran is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship based on-site in Raleigh, North Carolina.
- The term for this position is Summer 2027.
