About the role#
This student role provides hands-on experience with the systems that monitor and control large-scale thermal operations. You will work alongside automation professionals to contribute to process control improvements, operator interface development, and data analysis. This position offers exposure to Distributed Control Systems, PLCs, Human-Machine Interfaces, industrial networking, and digital tools.
What you'll do#
- Support the development, testing, and maintenance of Emerson DeltaV HMI graphics and operator interfaces.
- Work directly with Emerson DeltaV DCS, PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems.
- Participate in automation projects that improve process reliability, efficiency, and operational performance.
- Analyze process and equipment data to identify trends and support troubleshooting.
- Develop reports, tools, scripts, or dashboards to improve engineering workflows.
- Assist with control system configuration and implementation activities.
- Maintain documentation in accordance with corporate standards.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program in Electrical, Computer, Software, Digital Systems, or Mechatronics engineering.
- Coursework or experience related to automation, controls, programming, or data analytics.
- Familiarity with programming or scripting languages such as C#, Python, SQL, or PowerShell.
- Interest in data analysis, visualization, and using technology to improve processes.
- Mechanical or electrical aptitude with a desire to learn how automation systems support industrial operations.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.

- Location: Kirby North and South Operations, Lac la Biche, Alberta.
- Term length: 12 months.
- Term start: May 2027.
- Shift schedule: 8 days on, 6 days off.
- Work modality: On-site.
- This is a safety-sensitive position.
